Painting is usually the final step in many construction projects. Painting serves two main functions. First, painting adds color and distinction to your project, personalizing your house. Second, painting is the last layer of protection your house has against the elements. On an exterior project, such as the one in the photos below, primers andContinue reading Painting. The final step
Kitchen update
Drawer modernization.
Kitchen: modernizing while keeping the old
This kitchen had custom made cabinets which needed modernizing but were hand made pieces worth keeping. We reused some of the wood, updated the hardware and made new pieces to match the older looking ones. A combination of ingenuity and talent and hard work. An up to date kitchen with is own unique look. Continue reading Kitchen: modernizing while keeping the old
Herringbone floor
Using maple and Brazilian cherry (jatoba) this herringbone pattern floor, surrounded by a border gives a unique look to this kitchen floor. This picture shows the quality of the finish carpentry, it does not show the 2 days of preparation that went into getting the location of the corners and the border. Great job Andrew,Continue reading Herringbone floor
Structural changes
We are renovating a kitchen which involved the removal of a structural wall. Pictured below is a new structural beam surrounded by new drain lines and new electrical work. Not a beautiful thing to look at necessarily, but pretty involved engineering and craftsmanship. Thank you to the designer, architect, engineer for the support and direction,Continue reading Structural changes
Chimneys and Foundations
Over the past few months, we have undertaken two moderate size masonry projects. The first, a chimney on the Southside of Providence – on a slate roof with entricate design details. Second, an old stone and brick foundation that was on the verge of collapse. The chimney was featured before in our article on complicatedContinue reading Chimneys and Foundations
Custom Leaders, Private Client: University Ave.
This week we are fabricating some custom leader heads and custom downspouts for a client on University Ave. The home was architect-designed and built in 1921. These leader heads are original and they were pretty banged up.
Specialty seaming techniques for complex roof intersections.
The great thing about tin-knocking and hand seaming is: any surface that has a pitch can be clad and seamed through without the use of soldering. Double locked, standing seams when properly executed can be carried through almost any complicated detail on a roof: again without the use of solder, petrochemical sealants, or any otherContinue reading Specialty seaming techniques for complex roof intersections.
Roofing Geometry for Unusual Roof Penatrations
Victorian houses are beautiful no doubt, but they often present complicated rooflines that require above average designs for flashing. This problem is one such example. We were recently commissioned to rebuild this chimney and flash in properly with permanent roofing techniques. This means no solder, no sealant, and NO cutting corners. The difficulty in thisContinue reading Roofing Geometry for Unusual Roof Penatrations
Copper work
Views of a new copper roof, the roof is flat and about 6 ft by 6 ft . Shinny now but will change to dark brown, then to green over time. Life expectancy… 70 or 80 years. Nice job Andrew and Kurtis
